MBPL Analysis Dashboard

This interactive dashboard visualizes the relationship between money, business interests, and political behavior in the U.S. Congress. It allows exploration of how campaign contributions from energy and natural resource industries relate to environmental voting patterns.

Data Sources:

  • League of Conservation Voters (LCV): Annual environmental voting scores
  • Database on Ideology, Money in Politics, and Elections (DIME): Campaign contribution data
  • Voteview: DW-NOMINATE ideology scores
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics: Fossil fuel employment and wage data by geography

Key Variables:

  • LCV Score: Environmental voting score ranging from 0 (anti-environment) to 100 (pro-environment)
  • Industry Spending: Total campaign contributions from energy and natural resource industries (log-transformed)
  • Party: D = Democrat, R = Republican, I = Independent
  • DW-NOMINATE: Ideological score where -1 is most liberal and +1 is most conservative
  • Fossil Fuel Wages: Total annual wages in fossil fuel industries by congressional district or state

Data Coverage:

  • House of Representatives: 2002-2022 (469 unique districts, 5,248 member-year observations)
  • Senate: 1992-2022 (50 states, 1,646 member-year observations)
